“Heuristics” aka
Laws, Rules, Frameworks, Razors, and Principles are my guiding concepts or guidelines.
Heuristics refers to general rules, principles, or approaches that aid in problem-solving and decision-making, often offering guidance or insight without being overly prescriptive.
General Principles and Constraints
• Pareto Principle (80-20 rule) – Focuses on the distribution of effects, where 80% of outcomes are often produced by 20% of causes.
• Lindy Effect – States that the life expectancy of non-perishable items, like ideas or technologies, increases with their age.
• Stein’s Law (Sustainability) – “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.”
• “Nothing defies financial gravity” – Implies the eventual downfall of unsustainable financial practices.
• Godwin’s Law – States that as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a Nazi comparison approaches 1.
Psychological and Behavioral Concepts
• Pollyanna Principle – Tendency for people to remember pleasant items more accurately than unpleasant ones.
• The Dorito Effect (Tricking the Brain) – Refers to how flavor manipulation can trick the brain into craving processed foods.
• Diploma Problem – Suggests that society often sees degrees or diplomas as minimum qualifications for competence, which may limit broader skill appreciation.
• Toothbrush Problem – Describes the phenomenon of people valuing their own solutions or ideas highly while being less receptive to others’ contributions.
